Natural Resource Damage Assessments
Statisticians with WEST are internationally known for their common sense application of statistics to solve natural resource problems. They specialize in practical, state-of-the-art design and analysis of field and laboratory studies.
WEST’s involvement in the Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) process generally comes in study design, study implementation and statistical analysis associated with assessing injury. WEST’s role as a leader in designing and implementing scientific studies of natural resources has proven to be an asset when working as part of a NRDA team.
We emphasize the use of valid sampling methods in order to attain scientifically sound conclusions that are representative of the area of interest. We have provided guidance in designing and analyzing results from long-term monitoring studies. After multiple research projects have been conducted WEST is exceptionally qualified to conduct meta-analyses and provide a synthesis of the analytical information that has been collected.
WEST’s NRDA work has involved large and small spill events; most notably, our staff designed studies to evaluate impacts to wildlife following the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill in 1989. More recently, WEST has assessed the injury from the 2010 Gulf Oil Spill on marine mammals, turtles, oysters, and nearshore environments.
In the NRDA case involving the inactive Blackbird Mine in Idaho, we worked with federal scientists to investigate fish mortality associated with contaminated soil, sediments, and mine tailings.
