Ryan received a B.S. in Biology from the University of Wyoming in 2009 and a M.Sc. in Biology from the University of Manitoba in 2014. His graduate research focused on stress physiology and ecological interactions between Arctic foxes and small rodents in northern Manitoba, using techniques for measuring environmental stress and stable isotope tracers. Since completing his master’s work, he has been involved in projects involving raptors and songbirds, including field research on sensitive species. He has also participated in breeding bird surveys and worked as a bird banding assistant at songbird and raptor banding stations.
