Andrea Chatfield Andrea Chatfield joined the WEST staff as a wildlife biologist in 2007, working out of her office in Arcata, California. Andrea received her B.S. in Natural Resources & Environment from the University of Michigan in 1996; and received a M.S. in Wildlife Conservation from the University of Minnesota in 2005. Andrea has over 15 years of experience working in the field of wildlife biology, including seven years leading survey crews for a long-term spotted owl demography study in the central Sierra Nevada of California. Her graduate research involved creating a landscape-scale cover-class map and testing predictive models of spotted owl habitat use at multiple spatial scales using a GIS interface. Andrea has additional experience working on a variety of research projects throughout the U.S. and overseas including the design and implementation of surveys for northern goshawk, great gray owl, burrowing owl, willow flycatcher, Hawaiian honeycreepers and other passerines, pine marten, Pacific fisher, western fence lizard, and Cassowaries. She has experience with numerous wildlife survey techniques including avian broadcast, fixed-point, line-transect, track plate, camera trapping, nest searching, radio telemetry, mist-netting, and acoustic monitoring with Anabats.

Since joining WEST, Andrea has primarily been managing pre- and post-construction environmental studies at wind energy developments mainly throughout California including initial site evaluation, avian use surveys, bat acoustic surveys, ground and aerial raptor nest surveys, land cover/habitat mapping, T&E species surveys, and avian and bat fatality monitoring. Andrea has experience with all aspects of project management including budget preparation, hiring and training field survey crews, coordinating with clients, designing wildlife studies to meet the needs of clients and resource agencies, study implementation, and report preparation.

Andrea lives in Arcata, California with her husband (Jeremy) and dog (Izzy), and spends her free time birding, backpacking, kayaking, and scuba-diving.
