| Introduction to Modern Capture-Recapture Analysis |

| Drs. Bryan Manly and Trent McDonald of WEST Inc., Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyoming,
will present a series of four webinars on modern methods for analysis of capture-recapture data. This series
was presented as a one day workshop at The Wildlife Society meetings in Tucson, AZ, last fall. The Webinars
will present an introduction to capture-recapture analysis, and are designed to improve understanding of the
underlying motivations and methods of widely-applicable models. The individual webinars are based on chapters
in the Handbook of Capture-Recapture Analysis published by Princeton University Press in 2006, and it will be
useful, though not essential, for participants in the webinars to have a copy of the book available. Copies can
be obtained from Amazon.com, Princeton University Press, bookstores, or WEST, Inc. (6 copies only, contact Tia at

Dr. Bryan Manly will cover a brief history of, and motivation for, capture-recapture studies (Handbook Section 1.1), a brief review
of general maximum likelihood methods (Handbook Section 1.3), the classic closed population estimators
(Lincoln-Peterson, Snabel census; Handbook Section 2.3), and the Otis et al. models (Handbook Section 4.2).

Dr. Trent McDonald will introduce the closed population Huggins model (Handbook Page 72) and illustrate it by way of examples.
The Huggins model is a useful model for modern studies because it allows researchers to incorporate covariates into models for
capture and recapture probabilities. Computations will be illustrated using Excel and MARK.

Dr. Bryan Manly will introduce the Jolly-Seber model (Handbook Section 3.2), Cormack-Jolly-Seber (Handbook Page 45),
and the Manly-Parr method (Handbook page 54). Dr. Manly will then cover a general model that includes covariates:
the Lebreton et at regression approach to the Cormack-Jolly-Seber model.

Several examples, including the dipper data (Handbook Table 9.11) will be analyzed. MARK and Dr. McDonald’s MRA package for R will be used for computations.
